The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over investigations into the alleged abduction of businessman Jimmy Mutava, saying detectives from its specialised Anti-Abduction Unit are pursuing several persons of interest to establish the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
In a statement on Sunday, the DCI said the unit assumed control of the case after a report was made at Mlolongo Police Station on July 27, 2026. The agency said investigations are ongoing and pledged to keep the public updated as significant developments emerge.
"Investigations are currently underway, with detectives pursuing several persons of interest as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incident," the DCI said.
The latest development comes a day after Mutava's family raised concerns over his disappearance, saying they still have no information about his whereabouts despite the emergence of CCTV footage that they believe could provide crucial leads.
According to the family, the footage shows Mutava arriving at an entertainment joint in Mlolongo at around 6:30 p.m., where he met a senior police officer attached to Mlolongo Police Station. Another man later joined the meeting before Mutava was allegedly abducted outside the premises at about 8:20 p.m.
The family claims the footage contradicts an account allegedly given by the police officer, who reportedly told them he had gone to the washroom when Mutava disappeared.
"Nilipata OCS na msichana mwingine kwa meza... Nikamuuliza Jimmy ameenda wapi, akaniambia Jimmy amechukuliwa. Nikamuuliza kiaje, akaniambia nilienda kwa choo kurudi nikapata hayuko," said Mutava's friend, Paul Ngunda.
Mutava's wife, Margaret Mutuku, has also questioned why those present failed to intervene, saying the family continues to search for answers as their children wait for their father's return.
"Kama familia tunauliza niaje mtu aite mtu kwake halafu aende apotelee kwa mikono yake... Mpaka watoto sahi wanauliza baba yao ako wapi," she said.
The family says Mutava's last known mobile phone signal was traced along Kamiti Road, but they have not received any official information on his whereabouts.
As investigations continue, the DCI has appealed to members of the public with any information that could assist detectives to report it confidentially through the toll-free Fichua Kwa DCI hotline on 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
"All reports will be treated with strict confidence," the agency said, adding that it will continue updating the public as the investigation progresses.
