British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, has died after a crash during the eighth stage of the Tour of Portugal, bringing the race to an early end on Friday as organisers cancelled the closing ceremony in mourning.
Tarling was involved in what organisers described as a “serious accident” during the stage from Melgaco to Fafe. His death was later confirmed by his NSN Development Team, which paid tribute to the young rider and sent condolences to his family.
Portuguese broadcaster RTP, which was covering the race, reported that Tarling was involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The vehicle was not part of the race.
The accident forced organisers to suspend the stage with about 20 kilometres (12 miles) left to the finish. The podium ceremony was also cancelled as a mark of respect following the tragedy.
In a statement shared on social media, the NSN Development Team confirmed Tarling’s death and expressed its condolences to his parents and his brother Josh, who rides for the Netcompany-Ineos team.
“Fin was a much-loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed,” the team said.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also sent his condolences to Tarling’s family and team. Writing on X, Montenegro said the news of the cyclist’s death “leaves us deeply shaken”.
The Tour of Portugal organisers said the decision to halt the stage and cancel the podium ceremony was taken “in a sign of respect and mourning” following the fatal crash.
Tarling was riding for the NSN Development Team, which is co-owned by former Barcelona football star Andres Iniesta.
The 19-year-old’s death has cast a shadow over the Portuguese cycling event, with his team, race organisers and public officials mourning the loss of a young rider who was described by his teammates as a much-loved member of the squad.
