Absa Bank Kenya confirms Yusuf Omari as new CEO

Absa Bank Kenya has confirmed Yusuf Omari as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, giving him a permanent mandate to lead the lender after more than a decade in its senior management.

In a statement on September 10, 2026, Omari’s appointment took effect immediately after receiving the required regulatory and internal approvals, according to the bank’s Board of Directors.

He had been serving as the bank’s Interim Managing Director since July 1, 2026, following his long tenure as Chief Financial Officer, a position he held since 2009.

His appointment places an experienced insider at the helm of the bank as it seeks to maintain growth and strengthen its position in Kenya’s competitive financial services sector.

Omari has more than 20 years of banking leadership experience covering finance, treasury, strategy and transformation, risk, governance and executive management.

During his time as Chief Financial Officer, he was involved in efforts that supported profit growth, improved the bank’s cost-to-income ratio and expanded its Corporate and Investment Banking, Business Banking and Consumer Banking operations.

He also led or supported key initiatives in digital transformation, capital optimisation and ecosystem banking.

The Board said it settled on Omari because of his understanding of the Kenyan banking industry and his record within the bank.

The appointment, it said, would provide “continuity in leadership” as Absa implements its strategy and focuses on customers, employees, shareholders, regulators and other stakeholders.

Omari holds a degree in Economics and a Master of Business Administration. His career at Absa has seen him rise through senior leadership roles before taking charge of the bank’s overall operations.

The Board expressed confidence that his experience and strategic understanding would help the lender build on its existing foundation and pursue further growth.

“His extensive experience, strategic insight, and commitment to excellence” would support the bank’s next phase, the Board said.

Absa Bank Kenya is part of Absa Group, one of Africa’s major financial services organisations, which operates in 12 African markets and has representative offices in New York, London and Beijing.

The group said it remains committed to supporting the Kenyan unit’s long-term growth plans and strengthening its position in the local financial services market.

Omari’s confirmation ends his period as interim chief and gives him a full mandate to steer Absa Bank Kenya’s operations as the lender moves into its next phase of growth and transformation.
