The 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals get underway on Thursday, with Morocco facing tournament favourites France at Boston Stadium in Foxborough. However, beyond the race for a place in the semi-finals, 17 players enter the last eight carrying yellow cards and risk missing the next match if they are booked again.
For Morocco, defenders Issa Diop and Achraf Hakimi, alongside midfielders Redoune Halhal and Bilal El Khannouss, are all one booking away from suspension. France, meanwhile, have midfielder Manu Koné and attacking midfielder Michael Olise walking the same disciplinary tightrope.
England also have several players under pressure after their hard-fought victory over hosts Mexico in the Round of 16. Jude Bellingham, Nico O'Reilly, Declan Rice and Marc Guehi were all booked by Iranian referee Alireza Faghani and must avoid another yellow card when they face Norway in Sunday's quarter-final in Miami. Norway, by comparison, have only one player at risk of suspension, Antonio Nusa.
In Kansas, defending champions Argentina will take on Switzerland in another blockbuster quarter-final. Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka, Denis Zakaria and Miro Muheim all carry yellow cards into the tie, while Argentina defender Gonzalo Montiel—whose winning penalty secured the 2022 World Cup title—is also one caution away from suspension.
Friday's quarter-final in Los Angeles between Spain and Belgium features fewer disciplinary concerns. Spain have only Ferran Torres on a yellow card, while Belgium's only player at risk is Brandon Mechele.
According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), players who accumulate two yellow cards in separate matches before the disciplinary reset receive a one-match suspension under FIFA tournament regulations.
With a place in the semi-finals at stake, the players already on yellow cards will have to balance aggression with caution, knowing that another booking could rule them out of one of the biggest matches of their careers.
